The credit of this victory goes to striker Paolo Rossi. In the knockout stages he scored a hat trick against Brazil that led his team to the semi-final. He scored two goals against Poland. Italy defeated West Germany 3-1 in the final. Rossi scored the sixth tournament goal and was awarded the Golden Shoe as top scorer.

Italy is known for producing world-renowned players such as Roberto Baggio, Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Gianni Rivera, Dino Zoff etc who are known till date as storehouses of talent. In the 2002 FIFA World Cup South Korea/Japan, Italy had to exit after Round of 16, as they were defeated by South Korea in the Second Round in the penalty shootouts.
